Guadalajara is a city with more than 450 years of history, and about 6 million inhabitants. You can imagine that as a big city, it offers a great deal activities and diversity. There are many places in Guadalajara where the Tapatíos given name to the people that live in the city- like to spend their time during the week. One of the favorite activities for everybody, perhaps because of the ties with our roots and traditions, is to listen to mariachi music, while eating or drinking something. There are several places in the city where you can do this. Many of the Mexican and sea-food restaurants have live marichi music; in Tlaquepaque you will find lots in a small concentrated area. There are also several bars in Guadalajara where the Mariachi groups perfform all the time like, El Bariachi, the Casa Bariachi or Mexicanísimo. Guadalajarans are really football-crazy, therefore every weekend they like to go to one of the two professional stadiums, to shout, cheer and support their favorite team. The Chivas Rayadas del Guadalajara, The Zorros del Atlas and the Tecos from the Universidad Autónoma, are the three professional soccer teams of the city. The first two play in the Jalisco Stadium, the third plays at the Estadio Tres de Marzo Stadium; so Friday and Saturday nights or Sunday afternoons are soccer days for tapatios. Going to the stadium is fun, even if you are not a real football fan, everything that happens around you is an example of Mexican culture; also, in the satadium you can eat several traditional snacks from Guadalajara like the "huasanas" boiled green chickpeas with a little salt- or boiled salty peanuts, and a nice cold "Sol Beer". Like in any big city, in Guadalajara you can find several movie theatres, from ones that show the latest releases, like Cinépolis or the Multicinemas, to small places, such as the Cinematógrafo, the Cine Foro de la Universidad de Guadalajara or the Cine Teatro Cabañas where you can see art or experimental films. An outstanding aspect of Guadalajara, is the big number of shopping malls and plazas. From individual shops to big modern centres with hundreds of stores, you can find any kind of place to go shopping or just to go for a walk. Some of these places are Plaza del Sol, Plaza México, Centro Magno, La Gran Plaza and many more. Due to the great weather Guadalajara has almost all year round, (except during the rainy season) it is an ideal place outdoor activities, like visiting Guadalajaras Zoo or the Selva Mágica amusement park. Also you can eat or drink outdoors, at one of the numerous coffee shops or restaurants that terraces. Some of these are: La Vida Leve, Greta, Las Palomas, Pianola Plaza and many more. Nightlife in Guadalajara is also fun, normally it begins on Wednesday, a day when many tapatíos go out to bars and discos, that generally offer open bars and ladies nights. Fridays and Saturdays are also going out nights; there are several nightclubs to cater for for every kind of taste and musical interest, from mellow bars with live music like The Factory, Despeñadero or La Tertulia; to crazy discos like Nuts, El Metro, or El Mito. Now, for all those who like traditional and more popular stuff, you can find some good cantinas in the city centre, such as La Maestranza, La Fuente or La Mutualista. Another hobby that has become popular amongst teenagers in the last few years is pool. Therefore, there has been an explosion of places where you can play. Normally, what you find at this kind of place are several pool tables and a bar that only sales beer and soft drinks; to mention some of them, there is Billa Rock, Billar del Centro or Las Barandas. You can also find in Guadalajara some places to go bowling like Bolerama del Country, the Bol 2000 or Bol Guadalajara among some others. As you can see, Guadalajara has an option for any taste or age. Spending some days in our city could be fun to say the least, you won't be bored. |
