Florence-stage and screen Florence offers productions the whole year round: theatre, cinema, one will find original works and classical programmes. Visitors and Florentines alike are always impressed by the wealth of entertainment. Although there are many more cinemas (26, with a sum total of 40 screens), compared with the amount of theatres (4), it is unfair to say that Florence favours the "Big Screen" to the stage. The Florentine theatrical tradition has always been noteworthy, for example, the famous Maggio Musicale Fiorentino attracts many famous people. Cinema Recently, the number of cinemas has increased considerably in Florence, many of the multiplexes have been renovated and reopened. This change in the amount of cinemas that exist has created a climate of 'non-stop? cinematography, and has put a stop to the Ferie (holidays) when many Florentine and Italian cinemas would close during the summer months. Florentine cinemas are very varied, most of them show general releases, but they can be modern one screen and multiplexes and small independent cinemas. The Cecchi Gori Group owns the most cinemas in the city. The Atelier group makes sure that Arthouse theatre is kept alive, they have 6 cinemas which guarantee that good quality independent films and often show previews attended by the directors and actors themselves. On Wednesdays prices are reduced to L.8000 and cinema going is popular then and also at Christmastime, but above all during the summer. Between the months of June and September, you can watch a film in the open air, as you sit beneath the stars; the new summer releases and the previous winter smashes? are shown to an avid public. Some of the 'normal? theatres will remain open, many of these have air conditioning (which is a great way to avoid the humidity of a Florentine summer) and above all the mosquitoes. Some of the cinemas in the centro storico, have weekly showings of films in the original language. Florence by night The end of the week in Florence, (as in almost every other city) is the time that most people want to go out and stay out until late, Florence has a large number of bars and discos, which people can enjoy any day of the week. The nightspots in Italy manage to satisfy even the most demanding clientele. If a person wants a chic aperitif, Florence will meet their needs, perhaps Caribbean, a night of house music or Latin rhythms, if you're hungry and fancy a midnight snack, perhaps in a noodles bar, Florence satisfies everyone. Café-bars For a quiet evening drinking and chatting late into the night, why not try Il Caffè in Piazza Pitti, or l?Hemingway close to Chiesa del Carmine or il Genius where you can play board/card games. Zoe, Dolce Vita and Porfirio Rubirosa are a little more crowded and lively, while Caffè Caracol has a Latina vibe. If you are more of a wine lover, then there is Pitti Gola and Cantina. Pubs and bars The William Pub or the Chequers Pub are styled after Breton pubs. They sell infinite variety of beers, and snacks accompanied by good music and are populated by Florentine beer lovers and foreigners alike. Discos Florence offers a great variety of nightspots, it is possible to choose between mainstream discos like Meccanò, lo Jab or more specialist places such as il Tenax or Flog rock bars. There are many nightclubs (above all during the summer) where there are theme nights, and people can dance, listen to music, dance and chat. Some of these eg Pongo close to Teatro Verdi and il Lidò on the banks of the Arno, which attracts at least half of the city, le Vie di Fuga, in the ex prisons of Murate, il Sottosopra between Santo Spirito and il Carmine and Soul Cities near the Fortezza. |
