Modern Cusco pulses to the rhythm of its main activity - tourism, which has produced a great versatility in the products and services economy of this town of 1 million people. Nowadays, there is an adequate infrastructure for the huge amount of visitors, which is geared towards satisfying their needs and ensuring that they have fun.
Visiting Museums There are many museums and galleries open in the city. In order to visit the most important ones, you should buy the "Boleto Turístico". The most important museum, of Pre-Hispanic culture, is the Inka museum, located one block from the Plaza de Armas (formerly it was Marques de Vallumbrioso´s residence which housed the best New World library). One block further on from there, is the Plaza Nazarenas, where you can find the Casa Cabrera, with its permanent exhibition of work by the famous photographer Martín Chambi. Next to the Plaza de Armas, is the Plaza Regocijo, where the Casa del Inca Garcilaso de la Vega museum is situated, which exhibits colonial art, as well as the Contemporary Art Museum. Other galleries to be visited include Banco Wiese, which is located in the Casa del Inca Tomas Tuyro Tupac one block away from the square); the gallery of the Escuela de Bellas Artes; and the pictorial exhibition of works by children from Andean communities, called Irq'i Yachay, that you can find on San Blas hill.
To Start Off the Evening In the Centro Qosqo de Arte Nativo (on Avenida El Sol), there is a daily show of the region´s folkloric dances, which has been running for more than twenty-five years. Afterwards, you can start the evening by eating in one of the restaurants in our guide, many of which also have their own folkloric shows. Then you can move on to the many clubs and pubs in the city and end the night in the best way: dancing!
The Best of Cusco´s Nightlife There is a great variety of places where you can dance, but before you go to a club, you should check out Procuradores street. Some of the longest running places are the Kamikase, the Ukukus, the Mama Africa, all of which are pubs that liven up the nights in Cusco, with great drinks, good music and lots of spontaneity. When it comes to clubs, Up Town is a good choice (mostly electronic music), and there are also the Muki and the Xcess, two of the most popular venues amongst Cusco´s residents. Most of these places are located in centre of town, so you´ll probably end up visiting several places in the same night. Make the most of it and enjoy! |
