Cartagena: a city of fun Cartagena is in itself a paradise, with beautiful beaches, shining sun, sea breeze and history everywhere. For that reason it is difficult to think of a specific sort of entertainment because in this city there are recreation and enjoyment opportunities for every age and taste. There are places to drink coffee with friends, or you can take risks at the casinos, visit museums and cultural places, spend your time talking spontaneously or being with your family. City of squares and cafés Nowadays the cafés in Cartagena are in fashion, especially those that surround city-center and those that are outdoors. And it is hardly surprising that these cafés attract so many visitors; there is nothing like drinking a delicious cocktail or a Colombian coffee in good company while watching the dusk or enjoying the moonlight in complicity with the walls and balconies of this city full of history. Santo Domingo is a very famous square, visited by renowned figures, tourists and people all over the world. This square is located in front of the church with the same name. It is so important that the famous Colombian painter and sculptor Fernando Botero decided to give one of his works to Cartagena, the sculpture Mujer reclinada, on condition that it would be placed in this square. Some cafés such as Café Santo Domingo, Café de la Plaza and San Bernabé form part of this place where the service, the view and food are excellent. Another square is Plaza de San Pedro, in front of the church San Pedro Claver, where the remains of this Catholic saint lie. This square is a pretty place where you will be able to admire wrought-iron sculptures that show the local customs; you can also taste Pan-Asian and Mexican food, drink a cappuccino coffee or a cocktail in Restaurante San Pedro, go to Museo de Arte Moderno (modern art museum) or buy handicrafts in La Tienda del Museo or in Palenque, all this in the same area! San Diego is a square located in front of Hotel Santa Clara. There are several restaurants in that area, such as Fellini and Pazza Luna. There are more informal squares as Plaza de los Coches, behind the Torre del Reloj (clock tower), where people from Cartagena meet to chat or watch street shows. By the way, there are usually informal shows on the squares such as jugglers, fire-eaters, acrobat dogs, mimes and human statues. A very singular café with an atmosphere worth remembering is Café del Santísimo, a place completely decorated with sculptures, images and symbols of the Catholic religion. The menu has very funny names, related to that subject. But let us talk about less sacrosanct subjects... Nights of fun and games Nights in Cartagena invite to excesses and satisfaction of the senses. This is an explosive combination you can find in the casinos of this provocative city. Most of the casinos are obviously in the hotel and tourist areas of Bocagrande and El Laguito. In Cartagena there is space for arts and culture. In the city-center you will find the renowned Museo del Oro, where there are original gold pieces made by the natives that lived in the country in the past; likewise, you will find Museo de Arte Moderno (modern art museum), that has works of contemporary artists. There is also Museo Naval (naval museum), a large building exhibiting objects related to nautical affairs. On the other hand, there are schools specialized in the teaching of music, painting, sculpture and photography. The most prominent is undoubtedly Escuela de Bellas Artes (beaux-art school), located on Plaza de San Diego. |
