Cagliari, may only be a small city, but it has a lot to offer to its inhabitants and also to its visitors. Saturday tends to be the night when people let themselves go: cars come and go along the streets and in the central areas, groups of young people meet, longing to have a great evening and round off the week with fun and entertainment. They wait outside pubs and bars with their AICS membership cards, ready to pounce on a table as soon as it becomes free. Every group has its own favourite place, though they may follow the crowd and head for the latest trend-setting place. Fuori Orario, L?Ultima Follia, Linea Notturna, Red Fox, Sesto Senso, Carpe Diem, Divina Commedia, and La Scala, are just some of the examples of private clubs that are very popular. The majority of these hangouts have rather rustic décor, with subtle lighting and background music or live bands. Many places organize themed dance nights with instructors, the most popular being Latin American, Caribbean, or such group dances such as the Macarena or the Lambada. Places such as these include: l?Havana, Spazio Newton, Los Locos. In Cagliari, entertainment varies according to the season, the day of the week and also on what theatrical offerings there are. There are also many other shows that take place during the year. Cagliari in the summer Il Poetto, Marina Piccola and Buon Cammino are filled with people during the summer evenings. The Lungomare Poetto, has numerous kiosks on the edge of the beach with a continuous coming and going of visitors. Some come to enjoy the music that surrounds you wherever you go, others come to appreciate the fresh breeze that comes from the sea. The bracing air, the intense perfume of the sea and the starry night, make this a particularly romantic atmosphere. Live music, karaoke, and energetic dance classes are often organized on nights such as these. The impressive Sella del Diavolo hill, it frames and renders this splendid beach even more impressive. The hill is also visible during the night as it is lit by the lights from the tourist port of Marina Piccola, (another destination for people in the summer months). People come to admire the yachts, motorboats and the splendid sailboats moored here; they seem to be enchanted by the lights of the city reflected in the placid waters of the Golfo degli Angeli. The gulf has been transformed, embellished with flowerbeds, benches, lighting and a small amphitheatre where various artists can perform. A restaurant by the name of Lo Spinnaker, and a great ice cream parlour complete the picture. The people of Cagliari also meet in Viale Buon Cammino, one of the highest points of the city. Here, one can take a walk and admire the view, revive oneself with a cool drink sat beneath the shade of the trees. Sunday strolls When the weather is not too hot many go out to nose around the knick knacks which are to be found at Mercatino del Bastione or the market of S.Elia. The large group of people who come to browse makes the Borgo di Sant?Elia lively and interesting.Close to the sea the stalls attract crowds who allow themselves to be caught up in the traditional atmosphere of the old districts of the fishermen. Theate The history of theatre and shows in Cagliari has been a rather troubled one. Many places open and just as soon close down again, places such as: il Teatro Civico a Castello, il Politeama, il Cerruti, il Moderno, l?Eden Park, il Supercinema, il Giardino, il Massimo. Between 1800 and 1900, these theatres played host to many different types of show. Unfortunately, nothing much remains of these buildings, but a love for music, theatre and opera continues to live in the heart of Cagliari, a city whose people enjoy the finer things in life. With the exception of places such as l?Anfiteatro Romano and il Teatro delle Saline, it is now necessary to visit the newer theatres in order to discover the theatrical delights of Cagliari. The Teatro Comunale, opened in 1993 and hosted most of the important events in Cagliari. The Teatro Comunale along with the Anfiteatro Romano are places which are at the disposition of the Teatro Lirico di Cagliari, one of thirteen national lyric companies who carry out over 200 performances divided up into ballet, opera, concerts. Many of the ballets and operas are transmitted on television; works include Wagners 'Le Fate?, Puccinis 'La Bohème?, (where Andrea Bocelli made his debut) and Smetana and 'Dalibor? (first Italian production). Il Teatro boasts the collaboration of some of the greatest living musicians, such as Maazel, Rostropovich and Kleiber as well as prestigious choreographers and international stars such as Ferri, Bejart and Carlson. During the winter months, the concert season and the opera/ballet season take place at the Teatro Comunale, moving to the Anfiteatro Romanoduring the summer months for the opera season. Plays and prose take place in the cinema/theatre known as Alfieri, in Via della Pineta and in Chiostro di San Domenico. The centro Akròama focuses more on experimental works and new trends in theatre and can be found at Teatro delle Saline. Gli spettacoli di Jazz e Rock trovano infine spazio nel Teatro Tenda all?interno della zona fieristica di Viale Diaz. Cinema Cinema is diverse in Cagliari. Cinemas such as Capitol, il Nuovo Olimpia and the Nuovo Odeon show the most recent releases. There are other cinemas (il Vicoletto and Sant?Eulalia) that show deeper, more thought provoking films, including art house movies. There are lots of open-air movies during the summer; these are shown at the port of Marina Piccola, with a choice of art house films and general releases |
