Art - The fledgling art scene in Beijing is doing very well, thank you. Contemporary painting is enjoying popularity in the citys art galleries and exhibitions. However, it is still underdeveloped compared to other major international cities. For gallery showings, try the Courtyard Gallery, Red Gate Gallery, and the National Gallery. Traditional art, such as traditional painting and calligraphy, tends to be looked over in favor of the more modern art but it is still worth a look. Cinema - Designed to expose foreigners to Chinese cinema, Cherry Lane Cinemas features Chinese films subtitled in English for foreigners. French films are shown at the French Embassy Salle de Cinema. Foreign flicks can also be caught at Sculpting in Time Movies night. Dance - Beijing has played host to various international dance troupes such as the Joffrey Ballet. The Central Ballet is China' s premier ballet company which has annual performances of Western classics like Swan Lake. Performances can be seen at venues like the Poly Plaza International Theater. Museums - Museums are abundant in Beijing with a wide range. There are educational museums (good for the kids) like the Museum of Natural History (infamous for its pickled human specimens) and the high-tech China Space Museum. For those wanting to learn more about Chinese history and culture, there are historical museums like the Confucius Temple and the Former Residence of Song Qing Ling.
Music - Classical music has several venues in Beijing. The main one is Beijing Concert Hall which seats 1000 people. There is also Century Theater and International Art Palace. Various hotels also offer soothing evening performances for the ear such as the Palace Hotel and Jianguo Hotel. Traditional Chinese music employing such instruments like the erhu and pipa can be usually heard at Sanwei Bookstore. Rock/Pop/Jazz music is everywhere in Beijing. Live acts can usually be found at CD Cafe, Nashville, and Jam House. Big international names often perform at Capital Gymnasium and Workers Gymnasium. Beijing also plays host to an international jazz festival every year. Nightclubs - Beijing has a burgeoning nightclub scene. Most clubs are concentrated in the downtown area but there are also a couple in the Haidian student district. The clubs in the downtown area are more expensive but also have more slick atmosphere. The Vogue is for the serious clubgoer, playing techno and house music late into the night. For those who want to groove to South American sounds, check out Havana and Salsa Cabana - both have live bands and offer salsa dance lessons. For those who want to check out the seamier side, the infamous Maggie¡¯s is open all night. An underground gay scene is found at the Nightman disco. The chic and trendy the Loft is a new addition to Beijings club scene, raising new heights in night-time decadence. Beijing Opera - Characterized by vivid costuming, face make-up and a vocal pitch akin to caterwauling (as some say), this form of opera dates back to the 18th century. Extremely popular with tourists, Beijing opera can be seen in various teahouses and theaters such as Lao She Teahouse and Liyuan Theater. Theater - For theater, most performances are in Chinese. Leading Beijing theaters include the Experimental Theater for Modern Drama which is known for its avant garde shows. Western-style Broadway shows and Western operas are becoming very popular and can often be seen at various venues like the Poly Plaza International Theater and International Art Palace. |
