Aosta

Entertainment Information

Aosta is a town that offers various kinds of entertainment and the best part is that you don't necessarily have to go into the centre to find something interesting to do. One of the trendiest places, for example, is on the state highway, in Quart, before entering the city. Tatou, is a kind of "loft" , with two bars and a large choice of beers, as well as cocktails. The furnishings are dark colours and steel, and there is an enormous acquarium just inside the entrance. They play trendy music as well as old, disco favourites. There is also a new disco bar in this area, Statale as well as Divina disco which is a must on Wednesday evenings. There is another disco bar at the entrance to the city, on the east side. Compagnia dei Motori, is in Piazza Arco d'Augusto, and is a popular night spot especially with Harley Davidson fans. In the historic centre, in Via Sant'Anselmo, continue to the sidestreet of Ruelle des Fermes to find the English atmosphere of

Old Distillery Pub. This is a pub characterised by an authentic "brit style? that influences everything from the furnishjngs and the beer to the music and the waiters. The large number of English tourists who come here to ski in winter are at home here. Not far away, at 5 Via Vevey is Café du Moulin, a bar that offers a good choice of wines and is popular throughout the week. In summer, customers can sit outside. In the centre of the city there are a range of places where you can enjoy an aperitif. A lively street is Via Sant'Anselmo, which becomes Via Porte Pretoriane, after the Pretoria gates, and leads to the main city square, Piazza Chanoux, and the home of the town hall. There are also some quality places here, such as Caffè Nazionale. Behind the square, near the Cathedral, is the Ad Forum tavern,a high class place with a well stocked cellar and lovely, outside seating. After Piazza Chanoux, there are more bars in Via De Tillier. If you are in this area at aperitif time, you must stop at the Brasserie du Commerce, a historic bar in the centre of town. Further on, after the Piazzetta Croix de Ville, there is another bar that is a favourite with local youth and is a must for 'belote? fans, which is card game that almost has religious significance in this area. This is Caffé Aubert. Almost opposite, towards Piazza della Repubblica, are two other interesting places. On Via Aubert is the Creperie Le Carillon, where they serve great savoury and sweet pancakes as well as pizzas and other hot food. This is another place to play 'belote?. In Via Malherbes, near the creperie, is Rocksi Bar, which is perhaps the trendiest place at the moment. It is furnished in a retro style, offers a vast choice of cocktails and drinks and plays sophisticated music to suit the clientele.

Away from the historic centre, the last two places are in Via Chambery. There is the Insolito Pub, which attracts nightowls who can drink until late here. In Viale Piccolo San Bernardo, just outside the city, is a place where you can have a drink and listen to the latest music, at Sweet Rock Café. In summer, the outdoors here is spectacular and they even serve food after midnight. Out of the city, go to Saint Pierre for another interesting place, called the Totem Saloon, which is furnished in an Indian stule and serves American food.

Cinema

Stereo Dolby Surround, a thousand seats and the largest screen in Europe; just some of what this cinema has to offer. Arena di Voglia di Cinema, is the open air cinema of Saint Vincent. This is the best way to enjoy a good film in the summer and they have the latest audio and video effects. The Voglia di Cinema programmes offers tens of titles for the summer season. Still in Saint Vincent, Voglia di Cinema has two other cinemas; the Palais which also has a large number of seats and high quality audio, and the auditorium dell'Ipr, a more intimate cinema with 144 seats and high level audio and video sound. There are two cinemas in Aosta, both in Via Xavier de Maistre. The old Corso has just reopened, and is now Theatre de la Ville. It has a welcoming atmosphere with a bar by the entrance, and plays are also performed here. In the same street, near Piazza Chanoux, is the Giacosa which is also used for theatrical productions.

Casino and skiing

In Saint Vincent, just twenty kilometres from Aosta, is the casinò, the oldest casino in Europe. This is at the entrance of the city and has roulette tables, tens of slot machines as well as the usual card games, horse racing simulations and a special slot machine that takes Euros. The casino restaurant, the Brasserie, is recommended, and offers haute cuisine. There is also the Disco Slot, where you can gamble to the sounds of disco in the company of some fantastic dancers. Above Saint Vincent, at Valtournenche, is the ski resort Breuil Cervinia which consists of 200 kilometres of slopes between Italy and Switzerland. However the skiing resort of Aosta is Pila. This can be reached by cablecar from the square behind the railway station. There are many kilometres of slopes here and this is a favourite with snowboarders.
